Calculating Profit Margins When Purchasing from a Wholesale Supplier by Worldwide Brands

By Chris Malta, CEO & Founder of Worldwide Brands

Wholesale Tip Series: Tip #8

Many eBay Sellers ask what profit margin they should expect from a wholesale supplier. A ‘good’ profit margin is not a standard percentage. One must take into account the market, product, the demand, competition and many other factors. eBay market research tools can help sellers determine demand, price, and sell-through success on eBay. You'll gain a better understanding of what your likely sales price will be to help you decide which products will be profitable for you from wholesalers.

Another criterion affecting your margin of profit is your purchase volume. New eBay Sellers sometimes expect to make 100% profit on each of the products they auction or sell, because they are buying products at wholesale prices. Big retail chain stores may achieve 100% profit margins; but even for them, it is not typical. If you're like most eBay sellers, your business is small; and while that’s OK, it does mean you will not get the same wholesale price breaks the big chain stores do. You cannot expect to make the same profit margins big retailers make for the products you sell.

There are no hard-and-fast rules laid down for online retail profit margins. But there are a few general guidelines for what you can expect to earn. You certainly don't want to sell product at profit margins around a 15% profit. If you're earning 30 to 40% profit, you're doing very well.

Calculating your profit margin is not as easy as subtracting your wholesale cost from your retail cost. For example: if you buy a products for $5 and sell it for $10, plus the cost of shipping and handling, your profit margin is NOT 50%. Your profit margin is actually your retail cost minus your total ‘Cost of Goods Sold’ (sometimes called COGS). Your COGS must include all the costs involved in selling a product - the cost of hosting your website, or the fees for listing your auction, the advertising costs, and so forth.

If you take the time to know your real profit margins, you'll be better positioned to select the right products to sell. Don't try to achieve a standard value for your profit margins; the margin will change from product to product. It’s important to figure out the TOTAL cost of selling products, so you can calculate what your REAL profit per product is. Anything you exclude in your calculation when you determine your pricing will eventually come directly out of your profits!

5 Tips for Turning Closet Clutter into Cash on eBay by WhatDoISell

By Lisa Suttora, Founder and CEO of WhatDoISell.com

Is the money for your next vacation or that long standing home improvement project as close as your overflowing closets? It can be when you get into the habit of turning your closet clutter into cash! Most of us have at least one closet in our home bulging with items we never use. And many people have multiple closets filled to the brim!

If you have never thought of transforming your unused items into money in the bank, consider this…

No matter how tired you may be of certain items, there is always someone else who will find value in them and be willing to pay for them!

Additionally, the market for pre-owned goods has grown dramatically over the past few years! Shoppers looking to “go green” are buying used goods where they once bought new. Other people are revisiting the way they spend their money, resulting in fueled demand for used goods.

So how can you get started turning your closet clutter into cash?

Selling your unwanted items on eBay can be a quick, easy and profitable process when you follow these five “closet clutter into cash” tips:

  1. The first thing we need to do is get all that clutter out of your closets and believe it or not, this is often the hardest step for people! The #1 deterrent of turning clutter into cash is thinking that you’re going to use the item again! Make your decisions quickly. The longer you ponder over whether or not you should sell an item, the more likely it is to end up back in the closet. Focus on what you’ll do with your new found cash and you’ll find yourself very motivated to part with your unused items.
  2. Do some quick pricing & selling format research. The biggest mistake people make when selling closet clutter is misjudging the value of their unused items. Don’t let your personal biases undervalue what you sell. That long since used, hand painted longhorn lamp your husband bought for his den may be an eyesore in your mind, but there may be someone else across the country searching for a lamp just like it! Conversely, don’t let your personal attachments overvalue your clutter either. While you may have fond memories of that black patent leather handbag you splurged on in the ‘90’s, it may not hold the same cache’ for today’s shoppers. Keep in mind that every item you sell adds up to more money in the bank! And market demand plays the biggest role in the final selling price of your item. To get an idea of what items similar to yours are selling for and whether they’ll sell better in auction format or as a fixed price listing - do your market research by using eBay’s Completed Items search filter.
  3. Gather your items all in one place and look for any logical or unusual ways you can group items together. Creative bundling can net you higher prices. For example, instead of selling your pre-schooler’s outgrown clothing one piece at a time, think about selling a “LOT” ( i.e., a group) of items. Sell all your matching “size 4 girl’s summer clothes” together and offer another mom a whole new summer wardrobe for her daughter! One savvy seller put together a set of eclectic brightly colored dishes and sold it as a “Fiesta Set”! Her lucky buyer was thrilled to purchase a fun and funky set of colorful dishes that dazzled guests at her next dinner gathering.
  4. Take a good photo. Just because your item came from the closet, does not mean you should photograph it there! A clear, close-up, well-lit photo (using natural lighting from a window) with a clean white background will really showcase your items and can significantly increase your final sales price. Your item photo is the first thing buyers notice when scrolling through the eBay search results.
  5. Give people a roadmap directly to your items. The majority of all online purchases begin with a keyword search. Yet a lot of people don’t think about the importance of keywords when selling items from around the home. When creating your eBay listing title, think about what keywords your buyers will use to find your products. Do some practice searches and see if the title keywords that you’re thinking of using bring up a list of sold items (use the Completed Items search filter again to find recent items sold on eBay). The right keywords will help to connect your item with the perfect buyer.

Finally, list simply and quickly. Once people get into selling their closet clutter and realize how much money they can make, their tendency is to want to create the perfect listing and squeeze every last dollar out of their unused items. This leads to over complicating the listing process which slows down your progress and your profits dramatically! Remember, any money you make on an item stored in your closet is a net positive cash flow. And time is money! So don’t prolong the process of listing, go for it! Get it listed quickly using eBay’s Sell Your Item Form or Turbo Lister (both free eBay listing tools). And enjoy the profits as they roll in!

When you resell your unused items on eBay you make money, other people save money and you recycle. It’s a win-win situation! Now that you know what to sell and how to sell it, there’s only one thing left to do…

Get started turning your closet clutter into cash today!

How to Get Started With A Wholesale Supplier - Wholesale Purchasing Tips from Worldwide Brands

By Chris Malta, CEO and Founder of Worldwide Brands

Wholesale Tip #7

You can't rush success – in an eBay auction or with an eBay Store! eBay Sellers are often in a hurry, especially when it comes to starting an Internet business. They want to list products in auctions or throw up an eBay Store today and be rich tomorrow. Such impatient people typically do not succeed.

A lot of new sellers contact wholesale suppliers and ask for an account in order to purchase direct from the wholesaler and receive better pricing and profit margins when selling on eBay. You may find wholesalers are delayed in responding back to requests for wholesale accounts.

Wholesalers are busy people. They get many requests for accounts, which they process as quickly as they can. It takes time to set up an account because it requires a lot of work from the wholesaler. They must capture your information, process it and validate it. The wholesaler checks your information against their own criteria for granting accounts. They must determine if you and your business are a suitable fit for their brands and products. The wholesale rep must do the paperwork to set up your account. Some suppliers can open new accounts within days, but others may take weeks.

The season of the year may also impact how long it takes a supplier to open an account for you. The Holiday season begins for wholesalers in July. During this busy season, a wholesaler will probably take longer to respond to your applications. Spring and early summer are slow seasons for most wholesalers. At this time your requests may be processed more quickly. In early January, many wholesalers close for a few weeks for stock taking. You may find that it takes longer to get a response during the audit season as well.

Be careful to avoid rushing a supplier into responding to your request too quickly - especially if you want them to respond with a 'Yes'. Be patient and trust that they will process the application as quickly as they can. You can remind them occasionally. However, be nice about it!

Some Wholesalers Charge Refundable Deposits - Wholesale Purchasing Tips from Worldwide Brands

By Chris Malta, CEO and Founder of Worldwide Brands

Wholesale Tip #6

There are some fees that a genuine wholesaler will never charge. For example, if you are asked to pay an ‘Account Set-Up Fee’ and ‘Monthly Account Maintenance Fee’, you should suspect that you have encountered a wholesale scammer and are NOT talking with a legitimate wholesale supplier.

SOME real wholesale suppliers will charge a small refundable DEPOSIT when you first open an account with them. Typically they credit that deposit amount against your first order. The critical word here is 'refundable'. If there's a $100 deposit to set up your account, you should get that $100 back at the time of invoicing your first order of at least a $100 worth of product.

There's actually a good explanation for this ‘refundable’ deposit. The wholesaler is wants to filter out online sellers who are just 'tire kickers'. Online sellers have built a reputation for being 'Wholesale Window Shoppers'. So many online sellers will set up accounts with multiple wholesalers BEFORE they actually know which products they want to sell. So often, the online reseller never returns to buy anything. It costs the wholesale supplier money to set up these accounts. Wholesalers use these ‘refundable’ deposits to identify those retailers who are serious about selling the wholesale supplier’s products.

These refundable deposits are not typically large amounts because the wholesaler isn't trying to make money from them. Wholesale suppliers only try to ensure that you're not wasting THEIR time and money by establishing an account you won't use. You must check that deposit is refundable. A non-refundable account establishment fee should alert you to a scammer. It’s not the mark of a real wholesaler!

6 Tips for Cleaning out Your Closets and Cupboards and Making Money on eBay!

By Lynn Dralle, The Queen of Auctions

1. Look for anything that still has the tags (NWT) or is mint in box (MIB). My daughter and I just cleaned out her closet and found that she had outgrown many of her clothes. We spotted a Mary Kate and Ashley green hoodie and skirt. She had worn the hoodie but the skirt was brand new with tags. We listed them both together on eBay for $9.99 and were very pleased when the outfit sold.

2. Check your kid’s rooms for costumes, toys, plush stuffed animals and used sporting goods. Costumes tend to sell year round. Many smaller children like to dress up all the time. I know mine did when they were little. Toys can be great but make sure you check eBay's Recalled Items Policy pages for updated information on recalled items. Plush toys are also a hot item on eBay. I sold a Vermont Teddy Bear recently for $41.05.

Also, used sporting equipment like worn in baseball gloves and used cleats can bring in big bucks. Many young athletes grow too quickly and they don’t have time to break in a glove or cleats. I sold 3 used catcher’s baseball gloves for charity last year and they brought in over $80.00 for the three! Just last month, I sold a pair of my son’s used baseball cleats for $9.99. Don’t throw anything away!

3. Look in your kitchen cupboards and drawers for dinnerware/flatware that you don’t use anymore. My grandmother had given me a set of vintage sterling silver flatware when I got married. I found it in a plastic bag wrapped up in the back of one of my utensil drawers. We never used it except for maybe once or twice for Christmas! I listed it on eBay and it sold at auction and out of my eBay store for about $1200.00. Who needs that in the back of their utensil drawer?

4. Don’t forget to look in your kitchen cupboards for coffee mugs. Yes, I said coffee mugs. I think every interesting coffee mug is worth at least $9.99. If it does not sell at auction, it will eventually sell out of your eBay store. I have sold some coffee mugs for over $30.00. Mugs to look for are Starbucks, Taylor & Ng, Advertising mugs and anything with cute subject matter.
Check out this Iams coffee mug that sold out of my eBay store and this Starbucks mug also sold from my eBay store for $9.99. The Starbucks mug was in my eBay store for less than 30 days!

5. Go through your bookcase. Books are easy to sell and even easier to ship. Recently I sold a book about predicting the stock market based on ancient Japanese charting techniques for $41.01. I had bought it at a garage sale for 25 cents. This one I did not find on my book shelf, but it just shows you that books can sell for big bucks!

6. Don’t throw away anything before trying it on eBay.
My mom was cleaning out my kitchen cupboards, and she put a salt and pepper shaker in the throw away pile, because the base of the pepper was broken off. I said “Are you crazy? Those are Quimper Faience”. I put them on eBay and got $27.52 for them.

The bottom line is that “stuff” you find around your house will sell. Before you throw anything away, look at the item and ask yourself, “Is this worth $10 to someone on eBay”? If the answer is yes, get it listed! In this economy, everyone is looking for a bargain, and eBay is where they are going for those bargains. More eyes than ever are looking for your household discards. Remember, your trash, is probably someone else’s treasure and that sometimes “worn in” can be better than new.

The More You Buy, the Lower the Wholesale Prices - Wholesale Purchasing Tips from Worldwide Brands

By Chris Malta, CEO and Founder of Worldwide Brands

Wholesale Tip #5
Many new eBay Sellers don't realize the larger your purchase quantities, the lower the wholesaler price you can secure. We also hear many eBay Sellers complain their competitors' retail selling prices are lower than the wholesale prices they must pay. It's a valid frustration, but the reason is almost always that they are up against a competitor who is a much larger retailer and can buy products in much larger quantities. The larger Competitor is getting better wholesale price breaks.

Here’s how wholesale price breaks work. The per-unit price lowers as the order volume increases. If you buy less than 100 units of a product, for example, your wholesale price per item might be $5. If you buy from 101 to 250 of a product, for example, your price might lower to $4 each. Wholesalers make small profit margins; so they have to make their money by selling more quantity. The more you buy; the better prices the wholesale supplier can afford to give you.

Obviously, any online retailers who can afford to purchase products in larger volumes will get better prices. With better pricing, they can afford, in turn, to lower their retail prices and still make a profit. Don’t worry! Contrary to what some eBay Sellers believe, you DO NOT have to cut prices to compete. There’s MUCH MORE to selling than having the lowest price. Buyers may spend more to buy from a retailer who makes them feel secure. Effective selling is about building customer respect and trust, not undercutting the prices of everyone around you.

Begin with drop shipping and light bulk buying in small quantities as you can. When you determine the best selling products that earn more profits, you can negotiate better volume Price Breaks. This is the way to grow your online business at your own pace.

One of the first, and often most difficult, questions an online retailer has to answer when beginning starting an eBay business is ‘what should I sell?’ There are many different ways to answer this question. As a retailer, you might decide to focus on the latest ‘hot’ or trendy items. You might have a special source for a particular product that you want to sell. You might focus on products you purchased at a heavy discount, such as closeouts or discontinued items. You might even take the approach of high volume, low dollar margin or low volume, high dollar margin.

A good rule to follow when selecting products to sell, particularly when first starting out, is to develop a niche centered on products that you know and enjoy. This strategy may be as simple as filling out a catalog of products around a product that you already sell or opening up an online retail business based on a hobby or your current line of work. The bottom line is that when someone asks ‘What do you sell on eBay?’ it should not be a difficult question to answer. Rather than saying ‘all kinds of things’ you should be able give an answer like gardening tools, beddings and linens, or camping equipment.

When your strategy is to sell what you know and enjoy, you will notice several distinct benefits to your eBay business. First, you will become familiar with the products and prices in the category. Not only will you begin to recognize good prices when sourcing products but you will also learn know how to competitively price the items you are selling. You will also gain experience at predicting sales volumes and accurately forecasting income based on sales volumes.

Additionally, you will be able to write compelling product titles and descriptions when you are writing about a set of products that you care about. Compelling product titles and descriptions are more than just a manufacturer-provided list of product specifications and features. When you effectively highlight the enjoyment and experience associated with the product rather than simply the details and descriptions, your customers will sense your excitement and your sales will increase.

Arguably the best benefit of all is that you will begin to develop a loyal base of repeat customers. You will essentially be creating a community for people who are interested in the same types of products as you are. Customers will develop long term buying relationships with you when you can provide them with a satisfactory buying experience centered on a host of related products. Few customers return to an eBay store based only on price, rather they return because of products offered, trust, convenience, level of service, etc.

When you have decided on a product niche that you want to develop into a business, the next step is finding a source for those products. One way for a new online retailer to quickly and easily source products is through drop shipping. Unique Solutions for eBay Sellers with Custom Development

eBay sellers may not fit a cookie cutter mold or adhere to a one-size-fits-all model. They have different selling needs and different pain points. There are times when an eBay seller does not find an existing listing tool (eBay or Third Party) that works for their business. In these instances a possible answer is to look into custom development.

We have two companies in the eBay Certified Provider Program with years of experience specializing in custom development for eBay sellers and eBay -
Either company can build a complete solution specific to a seller’s business needs (i.e. listing solution integrated with their current retail Point of Sale and inventory system), or build a “bridge” or “add-on” for a seller currently using a listing tool but only in need of one additional feature (i.e. create the ability to export sales and tax information to QuickBooks).

The possibilities are endless when it comes to custom development. eBay sellers who have not found a current solution to fit their needs, we suggest looking into custom development by either JDT Technologies or CanDo. Both companies have a staff of eBay Certified Engineers and eBay Certified Consultants.

Please contact the JDT or CanDo directly to discuss what you need and receive a price quote.
